Things seldom change for the Amish farmer; they go about farming much as their ancestors did. The land holds a promise and they believe it must be enriched and not exploited. It is considered a sin to farm in such a way as to cause the soil to lose its fertility. They devised crop rotation centuries ago as a way to preserve the soil. Their life, though hard and crude, develops an amazing amount of self-reliance and independence.
